Arsames Interview, 8/22/08
Metal has forever been the redheaded stepchild of music. Some of the greatest metal bands have come from the most unlikely surroundings: Slipknot is from Des Moines, Iowa which meaning “river of the monks” and is home to the Iowa Caucus. Not exactly an area known for metal. Black Sabbath grew out of the WWII heavily bombed surroundings of Birmingham, England also home to rock legends Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest. Korn…well, who really cares. The point is, with the exceptions of the common breeding grounds like the Bay Area, Los Angeles or New York where if you have a pulse and two ears you have been in at least one band during your life, the enigma that is metal is usually birthed in intense surroundings.
With most of the world only seeing anything about Iran in the media ranging from comments by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to nuclear buildup, no one outside could ever percieve that out of the strictly run state of Iran would come such a great metal machine that is Arsames.
MetalStormMag: In Iran, metal music is not allowed to be performed live, promoted or played on the radio. Besides for its’ non-traditional roots and what could be considered as anti-religious or pro-Western in its’ presentation, how does the band continue to thrive in such hostile surroundings?
you know all the moselm countries have the same problem with this kind of music. the goverments think heavy metal is just a satanic music and it's gonna destroy their beliefs ! I don't believe in satan and I don't think satan can play this music lol btw we always paly underground ...music and we have never done it live here but we must be strong.... future is ours... since other western countries focus on our music they invited so many metal bands from Iran, I hope it's going to be more and give the chance to us to show ourselves to the world
MetalStormMag: With the recent advent of MySpace that has given a stage to bands from all corners of the earth, how has Arsames benefited from Internet exposure?
like others I opend our profile in 2006 and started to invite more people in there, you see we have so many friends from all over the world they invite us to their country they really love ARSAMES I think Myspace is the main goal for promoting us and we really appreciate it
MetalStormMag: As a person who frequents metal concerts in America as both a musician and a supporter, I have seen a special bond in the metal underground between bands and fans alike. In some of the heaviest concerts I have ever attended where half the audience is immersed within the torrents of the moshpit, if someone falls there is always a minimum of 3 to 5 people pulling them back to their feet. Even though our music is labeled as violent, metalheads have a kinship with one another. We are the blood of the breed, the fellowship of the fold. I am happy to have witnessed how well the metal community has embraced Arsames in a time where there is so much political tension between the West and the Middle East. What can we teach our respective governments and how can we get that message across? As you know, music is a universal phenomenon who has no boundries . As we have claimed several times , ARSAMES is a non - political band and I believe that this brothership between metalheads is the best message to everyone...
MetalStormMag: What bands have inspired the sonic thunder of Arsames?
As a typical answer legendary bands like black sabbath , judas priest , motorhead ..... and undoubtedly Iron Maiden ....! but some bands that had direct impression on ARSAMES are Death , Sodom, Sepultura , Amon Amarth .
MetalStormMag: In the short history of Arsames so far, what has been the band’s biggest accomplishment to date?
Although we have started our band recently and fulfilled our first album , we changed ARSAMES from a local band in an asian country to a well-known metal band in the world so that a lot of famous record companies are willing to have a contract for releasing our album and promoting our band in all over the world
MetalStormMag: In a time where most bands have the luxury of playing anywhere there is a stage, Arsames does not have those same opportunities…yet. If you could put together a metal festival, whom would you include on the bill and where would you play?
actualy we prefer to perform in our surouning countries ( that have invited us to perform there such as UAE , TURKEY, MALAYSIA ,ARMENIA....) but our real goal is perfoming with all famous metal bands everywhere in the world
MetalStormMag: What is coming up in the near future for Arsames and your fast-growing legion of followers?
Because compeleting of our first album took a little longer than usual , after releasing it,we will give the second one in a near future ( actualy some of it's tracks have been already made ....) and a video clip of HOMO SAPIENS ( in our first album ) is going to shock our lovers !!!
MetalStormMag: Any closing comments?
First we are willing to acknowlege all our supporters like MetalSorm Mag(specially you vince) , Myspace .... and all our fans indeed ....! we hope this brotherhood between metalheads grow more and more and we witness a time that people all over the world can discover the golden heart beating for the universal peace behind the rough appearance of metal music ... God Bless All Metals
